Invasive Species Prevention Zones

An Invasive Species Prevention Zone (ISPZ) is a formal LIISMA designation for a natural area that is dominated by native species and is known to support exceptional biodiversity concentrations.

Benefits of an ISPZ:

Prevention is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound method of weed control
Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) are the next best methods to Prevention
Optimizes use of limited resources (e.g., time, money, personnel)
Increases likelihood of success because it allows for a multi-agency, cooperative, coordinated management of invasive species on a much larger scale
ISPZs serve as refugia for native species which may result in greater resilience of our ecosystems to the effects of climate change

Suffolk County Parks has worked closely with the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA) program to map and complete development of a management plan for invasive species at Cedar Point County Park.
